The first night of the 2023 season will ring in with brilliant songwriter Eef Barzelay, whose fame as frontman of the indie rock trio Clem Snide has morphed into a varied solo career under the same moniker (taken from a character in several William S. Burrough novels). With a kaleidoscopic musical catalog ranging from 1998’s debut album You Were A Diamond, to the 2001 breakout The Ghost of Fashion (ranked 3rd best album of the year by Rolling Stone), to the fan-collaborated Songs We Made recordings as well as the recent and mesmerizing A Life In Song project, Eef’s unmistakeable voice and disarming lyrics led NPR to rate him “the most underrated songwriter in the business today, with a sneakily firm grasp on poignancy and humor”.
Eef’s 2017 cover of The Velvet Underground’s “I’ll Be Your Mirror” was featured in the soundtrack to The Handmaid’s Tale, and his 2015 rendition of Neil Young’s “Borrowed Tune” was highlighted in Cover Lay Down’s (Re)Covered In Folk – Neil Young: 45 Redefining Tracks From A Decade In Tribute.
His most recent album, produced by Scott Avett of the Avett Brothers, features members of The Avett Brothers, Band of Horses, Dashboard Confessional, and Old Crow Medicine Show.
