History Lives
Fort Uncompahgre was established as a fur trading post in 1828 by Antoine Robidoux, near the present site of Delta, Colorado. The Fort has come to life again as cooperation with the City of Delta, Interpretive Association of Western Colorado and the Old Spanish Trail groups manage this unique museum that is located at the entrance to the Confluence Park complex.
Robidoux established several trails for supplying goods to Fort Uncompahgre. The first of these, known as the Mountain Branch of the Old Spanish Trail, lead north out of Santa Fe, up into the San Luis Valley, thence northwest across Cochetopa Pass, then down into the valley of the Gunnison River to Fort Uncompahgre. This was a very difficult and challenging route, however, if not snowbound, was much shorter than following the Old Spanish Trail. The second trail, known as Robidoux’s Cutoff, was used for goods being imported from St. Louis. (exerpt from Mountain Men and Life in the Rocky Mountain West click here for more )

A Pool with a View
In 1993, North Fork residents voted to create the North Fork Pool, Park and Recreation District. Thanks to generous support from our community, Great Outdoors Colorado, and other funders, the District became a reality in 1995.
The North Fork Swimming Pool is located south of Hotchkiss at 333 Bulldog Lane. It is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and includes a children’s wading pool, therapy pool and picnic area.
For more information call 970-872-4244 or visit North Fork Pool.
A Taste of Frontier Life
One of the prime attractions of Cedaredge is Pioneer Town, located just two blocks south of downtown Cedaredge. Visitors can travel back 100 or more years in time at the special attraction, operated by the Surface Creek Valley Historical Society. When you visit Pioneer Town, you get a taste of frontier life during the past century in quaint Cedaredge, Colorado. As you walk along the wooden sidewalks of Pioneer Town’s Main Street, you can visit the Coalby General Store, the print shop, the saloon, the States mining museum, the Girling Mercantile, the bank, the marshal’s office, the jail house, the Wells Fargo office, and the barber shop which also doubled as a dental office.
But there’s more than Main Street in our 5 1/2 acre village. Save some time for the working blacksmith shop, Sand Creek School House, homesteader’s log cabin, Sutherland Indian Museum, Doris Doll and Toy House, famous Bar-I Silos, Austin Railroad Depot, and the award-winning Chapel of the Cross.
Pioneer Town is open to the public from Memorial Day weekend through Color Sunday in late September. Hours for the 2010 Season are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Special tours for groups are available year around by appointment. Wine Country Out West
Grape harvests in Delta County occur between Mid-August to Mid October with most of the harvests occurring in September. Harvest is followed immediately by the crush. Many wineries will allow you to come and observe. Don’t expect to see women stomping grapes in big barrels as in the popular scene from an “I Love Lucy” episode, but you will be able to observe this unique part of the winemaking business. Call your favorite winery to see when would be a good time watch or even join in!
